Please excuse this horrible picture of me but I'm really proud of how it turned out. The collar was a little tricky so it sits a little wonky. I really love the fact that I actually finished a sewing project from a pattern. And I'll totally be wearing these as pajamas during the wintertime.

Homemade Mac and Cheese!

I decided I needed to make some homemade macaroni and cheese today. Since I'm still pretty much a kitchen novice I needed an easy recipe. I found a recipe on Rachael Ray's website for Stove top Cheddar Mac and Cheese here. I halved the recipe since it was only going to be me eating it I also used mild cheddar instead of the listed extra-sharp (I've made this one other time and the extra-sharp was a little too 'sharp' for me). Here are some pictures of my adventure:

For a newbie cooker I would recommend having someone around to act as an extra pair of hands since noodles have a way of flying everywhere when you're stirring them in one-handed (trust me.) Other than that this is a really easy and great recipe. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

Harry Potter = All Sorts Of Awesome!

Well, I just got back from the movie and overall I loved it! They left some things out that I would have loved to see but it was really funny! Much more than the book. I totally recommend this movie. Just keep an open mind and you have to realize that the movie and book are two separate things, so don't freak out because not everything that happens in the book is in the movie.

Dumbledore is one BAMF in this movie and there are some super special effects too!

Harry Potter Crafting!

So, it's that time again...Harry Potter time! If I haven't mentioned this before I'm a huge HP nerd. I'm totally addicted to all things Potter. So I decided that I needed to make a shirt to wear when I go see the movie this week.

Just a warning: this post is very picture chunky! Enjoy!

I was planning on using a navy blue shirt but the JerZee brand shirts I buy never fit the same way. So I used a Hanes undershirt with grey fabric paint that I mixed. Zippers Are Alright With Me!

So, I've calmed down from the meltdown I had over the pleated bag and I tried the whole zipper thing again. I've decided that I love pleats and zippers separately but together they will never be my friend! So I made this larger version of the coin purse, I guess it's a quasi-cosmetic bag. Here it is:

Note to self: Make a light box! Obviously the whole paper thing isn't working for me. I have no idea why each of these pictures are a different color.

Well, I decided that I truly, truly HATE pleats (and zippers!!!)

And here's why: after finally attaching the zipper on my 'work in progress' zipper pouch the darn pleats didn't match up causing me to want to rip out my hair (and the stupid zipper) And when my not-so-trusty seam ripper failed to help me out of my situation I gave up on that bag for the moment.

And seeing how I need a gift for my co-worker today I decided to try something a little easier. A lined coin purse! I still had to work with a zipper, but this one didn't hate me so much!

I used left-over fabric from the fat quarter and my black linen-look stash. I sadly had to use a white zipper but I think it turned out rather well. I just guesstimated the size, it was big enough to hold a necklace (still on the cardboard) and a gift card with extra room, we'll say it's on the large end of coin purse sizes.

I think it turned out pretty well. This is the first thing I've made that was lined with a zipper. So now that I kind of know what I'm doing I might think about finishing the pleated bag...or maybe not.

My Work in Progress!

I found a tutorial for a pleated zipper pouch here and decided that I needed to make one, pronto! This one is for a co-worker's birthday. I've been trying to make all of my co-workers something homemade for their birthdays since I got my sewing machine last Christmas, but I digress. I cut out my pieces (which I measured out as 10" x 6") and I interfaced and marked my pleats. Tomorrow is the big sewing day. Since I have a love/hate relationship with zippers I like to do all of my cutting and other preparations before I even think about sewing. Here are some prep-pictures for your viewing pleasure:

T-shirt Shrug!

Well, this isn't a really big project or anything but I thought I'd post it anyway. I was going out for my best friend's birthday and I needed something to wear over a tank top so I made a shrug! I got the idea for a t-shirt shrug from EVEnl's tutorial at Cut Out + Keep. I just used an old shirt from Old Navy that was too short for me and some ribbon that I got at work. It was a super-easy project. I think it only took me about 20 minutes.

Book gift card holder!

My co-worker's birthday was the first of June, so myself and my other co-workers went in on a Border's gift card for her. I decided that we needed a fun holder to put it in, and it came to me...A BOOK! a book gift card holder to hold a bookstore gift card! So here it is...

I just made it with the cheapo felt sheets and embroidery floss. It ended up with 4 'pages' which is 2 white rectangles folded in the middle. I ended up putting the spine on to hide my shotty stitch work. Overall, I loved it- it was hard to give up, that's been happening a lot lately! =]

Vinyl Lined Cosmetic Bag!

So, my little sister is going to be moving to the east coast to live with my older sister for the summer. She's leaving next week and she totally guilted me into making her a cosmetic bag before she goes, as a going-away present. I used the same pattern that I used for my older sister's Easter cosmetic bag. But for this one I used Therm-O-Web iron-on vinyl (I found at Joann's) for the lining so if anything spills it won't ruin the inside. That stuff is pretty much incredible! It's super easy to use! Onward to the pictures!

My foray into screen printing!

So, I've been seeing screen printing a lot online lately and I thought, "what the heck, I can do that too!" So I checked out WhiMSylove's mini tute and I got shopping to make my own print!

I stopped at Michael's to pick up some Yudo screen printing ink (I'm too impatient to order the Speedball brand online- luckily Michael's is now carrying a screen printing machine and the ink for it) The ink:

Then, I prepared my "screen" (I used an old pair of pantyhose- It's what I had on hand) I got my little robot man from the Kittybuttons stencil website.

The finished product: (I just used an old men's undershirt--you know, the packs of like 6 Hanes shirts). I didn't get very good cover on his one little waving hand, but I think it gives him character!

Countdown Calendar!

I made up this little countdown calendar for my 6 1/2 year old nephew, Ethan. He's had a lot of changes in his life this year and has been having a hard time lately so I made this countdown calendar to mark the days until my mom and dad go up to visit (which also happens to be his last day of school.)

Here's the calendar--he named my mom BB when he was two, we have no idea where he came up with it but it just stuck =] --It is made of two thin pieces of cardboard that are held together by some wrapping paper I had laying around. I added a ribbon to hang it with and some foam star stickers to give it a little extra something.

Here's a close-up of some of the days:
I made the calendar pages in Microsoft Word which, may I add, took FOREVER! The pages are held on with plain brads that I had left from a project I made last year. I put in an activity for Ethan to do every other day to give him something to look forward to.

Find 5 things in your house that are your favorite color!

I hope that he likes it, he's really into writing his own stories (now he's into vampire stories, he wants to write like Stephenie Meyer because he knows we love her books--we've inadvertently made him a Twilight fan!!) and drawing so most of the activities center around that. This project could easily be tailored to fit any countdown needs. And kids love the idea of ripping off a page each day and seeing what activity they get to do next!

Fun with Terrariums!

I finally finished my terrariums! You would not believe the trouble I had trying to find plants that were small enough and that would survive in a terrarium. I ended up finding these little guys at Lowe's and now I can't remember what they are called (sorry!) I did manage to take pictures of the process. These were incredibly easy, even for me-- and I have no experience growing plants at all. Let's check out the pictures, shall we?

My first terrarium (finished):

Supplies

-Jar

-Soil

-Activated charcoal

-Pebbles

-Plants

-Water

The soil I used:

Activated Charcoal (I found this at Petsmart by the aquarium supplies):

Layers in the jar: first pebbles, second charcoal and third the soil.

Take the plant out of it's store container and shake off most of the soil around the roots:

Dig a spot for the plant, stick it in and lightly push soil around it. When you have it where you want it a little bit of water is needed. I wet a paper towel and squeezed the water into the jar, this gave me a little bit more control as to how much water actually went into the jar.

After the plant is watered I added some leftover stones that I painted with acrylic paints to give my jar a little color- I would suggest leaving the painted stones out of the jar overnight to dry that way the strong smell won't harm the plants:

Terrarium Love!

So, it's been too nice here to do much in the crafting department since I basically only sew and knit. I was in the need of an outdoor activity to do on nice days to stretch my crafty wings. I've been wanting to get my hands dirty and actually grow a plant for a long time now (sadly, no- my lucky bamboo doesn't count) but I've never had much of a green thumb. So I decided to try my hand at making a terrarium. And if this survives I'll try growing a plant in the ground! If you've never seen a terrarium they're little ecosystems of moss, soil, flowers or other plants that live in open mouthed or closed jars like this:

This is a slow process since I had a heck of a time finding just the right type of container. Finally I found these guys at Old Time Pottery for about $2 a piece.

I have all the supplies I need to start these fellas except for my plants- I know, it's a big thing to leave out- but I'm going to the nursery tomorrow to pick the guys out. I'm going to be taking pictures of all the steps of my journey into terrarium land and I'll be posting them for all later this week. Cosmetic Baggy DooDad!

So, originally my older sister and myself decided to make each other gifts for Christmas instead of buying anything this last year. I started out knitting her a scarf but soon got bored with it (as I usually do with knitting, it's just not fast enough!!) so I decided to make her a pouch. Well, to make a long story short, I had zipper trouble so I finally got the zipper thing down so I decided to fill the pouch with Easter grass and a couple stamps (she scrapbooks and makes cards) and gave it to her as an Easter gift. Here it is...

I had leftover material from the purse I made my younger sister for her birthday so I used it to make the pouch. I got the idea and how-to here. I made it bigger than the tute, I think I started out with a 12x9 inch rectangle of fabric. It's a pretty good size for a makeup bag or even a pencil pouch. And, oh yeah, I got the cute stamps at The Dollar Tree, once again proving that you can find just about anything there!

A Real Checkbook Cover! Finally!!

So, I FINALLY figured out the whole checkbook cover thing. You guys don't even know how many times I've measured, cut, sewed, taken apart, and almost cried over this thing (see my first try here.) Who would think that figuring out your own pattern for a simple checkbook cover could be so frustrating?? Anyway, I'm ecstatic that this is finally finished. Miss Piggy and Me (and a new distraction!)

Sorry for the recent dry spell lately. The only days I can craft are Mondays and Tuesdays and I spent my day taking care of Miss Piggy- who is my car if you were wondering. We got a bath, our oil changed, and we spent over an hour at Tire Discounters getting tires rotated. But while I was waiting I read through a Redbook and found a tidbit about JacksonPollock.org.

I did a project on Jackson Pollock freshman year of college and I've been interested in his work ever since, but this site lets you use your mouse as your paintbrush, the longer you let the mouse sit, the thicker the drips. Definitely a fun way to spend time when you should be doing something else!

Wee Bunny= Success!

Well, for over a week I was debating on whether or not to give my wee bunny to my co-worker or not. I liked him but I wasn't sure if I liked him enough to actually give to someone, you know? Well, after the urging of my family (and my little sister saying I would be dumb not to give it because he was so cute =]) I decide to give him, and my co-worker loved him! I'm happy, I'm very self-conscience when it comes to things I make, I just want them to be good. Well, that worry is over, thank goodness, now on to my next task- I wonder what that will be...

Let me tell you, this little booger was hard to sew! My seam ripper is now my arch enemy, I had to rip this apart three times I think. And re-do the ears twice (they're still a little too floppy and they're fraying a little bit, but we'll say it gives him character) And don't even get me started on the bottom! But I think he turned out well and I'm sure he'll be given lots of TLC at his new home. On the plus side I think I did pretty good on embroidering his face which is something I've never had the patience to do...

My Heat Therapy Bag Tutorial!

Yay! This is my first tutorial! I hope I explain everything well, if you have any questions, feel free to message me. [warning: this post is EXTREMELY picture obese!]

You'll need:
-2 strips of fabric 2 1/4" by 8"
-1 strip of fabric 3" by 8"
-1 strip of fabric 4 1/2" by 8"
-Muslin for the inner rice bag
-Rice (for this size bag you'll use about 1/2 pound)

First you want to cut your fabric:
Then I like to lay mine out to see if I like the look of it. I usually alternate colors but you can do it any way that your little heart desires.

Pin your first two pieces together wrong sides facing and sew across:

Attach your other two pieces the same way:

When all pieces are sewn iron down seams (if you want to add any accents to your cover this is the time to do it):

[Not shown: fold down the ends of the long sides about 1/4" and hem. I usually do a straight stitch and a zig-zag on top for extra strength]

Fiddle around with the way you want the cover to look (like how much of each color you want to show on the front) You then want to overlap the long ends about an inch and pin down the short sides (keep in mind that the color that's on the top will turn out to be covered by the overlap when you turn it):
Sew across the short sides trim the access and clip your corners:

Flip and press:

For the inner rice bag I use the cover as a template leaving about 1/4" around:

Sew around all edges of the muslin leaving a 2" opening for turning and filling. Turn. Using a funnel (or a Kohl's ad like me) fill about three quarters of the way full with your rice:

[Not shown: once the rice bag is full fold in the edges of the opening, pin and sew shut. I usually push all the rice to the closed end of the bag and put pins across under the opening so that the rice stays clear of the sewing machine.]

Slide the inner rice bag into the cover and you're done! You can enjoy the bag hot or cold.

Finished Finally!

Well, I finally finished my Aunt's birthday present-a heat therapy bag. I'm still new to this sewing stuff but I think it turned out great! I made my own pattern and I'm going to post it on Friday. Well enough chit-chat, onward to the pictures! [Be warned, picture overload ahead!!]

I filled the inner bag with long grain rice that I found at The Dollar Tree I used about one pound. I've tried it in the microwave (It gets hot in about a minute and a half) and the freezer (After about 10 minutes it was cold.) I didn't use any essential oils like I've seen people use on various websites so it has a rice-y smell but it gets the job done!

So, my aunt's 40th birthday is this week and lately she's been experiencing a lot of chronic back and hand pain. So I was thinking of making her a rice filled heat therapy bag for her birthday. As well as a soothing eye mask. I'm fiddling with my patterns now. As soon as I get them finalized I'll post them for all to see!

My First Purse!

Well, after weeks of contemplating and pattern searching I finally decided on the 'Butterflies and Fruit Pleated Tote' as my first bag. I made it out of lightweight white corduroy and purple polka dot cotton lining.

Overall, I think that white cord probably wasn't the smartest thing to make a purse out of, but I fell in love with the purple and white combo. Next time I make this I'm going to use a heavier weight fabric and interfacing for the handle for extra strength but I think it came out extremely well for a first purse. I still need to perfect my technique and learn how to put in snaps and pockets, but practice makes perfect, right? But, alas, I didn't get to keep it. I gave it to my little sister for her birthday. I'll post some action pictures as soon as I can so you can tell how large it is.

Twilight-y Goodness!

I decided to make my gifts for my secret santa over the holidays and since she's as obsessed with Twilight as I am I decided to use it as a theme. For her final gift I made her a cup cozy. I found this image on photobucket (which I turned into a bookmark for her as well):
And I used it as a template for the cozy. Here it is laid out:

Both Jacob and the cozy were made of the cheapo felt rectangles that you find in the craft store. I doubled up the cozy for insulation, Jacob is just stuffed with poly-fil. I used the Futuregirl! tutorial on how to blanket stitch.

I made a checkbook cover!

So, today I tried my hand at making a checkbook cover. I measured the cover I'm using now and fudged my pattern, which is probably why it turned out nothing like I planned... Anyway, I found this awesome fabric at Joann's and had to make something with it so I decided a checkbook cover would be easy enough (silly me!)

As you can see, I don't have an upper pocket on the inside so the top flap is a little lighter than I would like. But overall I love it! (and I get to show off my mad GIMP skills with the blurring effect!)

While at the Dollar Tree a couple weeks ago I walked down the baby isle and found these adorable piggy cups.

I wasn't sure what to do with them but of course I had to buy them (piggies are my favorite!!) So I started using them for loose buttons and other notions that were getting lost in my sewing kit. I went back two nights ago and sadly, they were all out of piggies, they had monkeys but I can't mix farm and jungle animals! So I picked up some plain pink cups. They work perfectly for unruly velcro and other small goodies. The Dollar Tree has never failed me yet!

If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm Mallory. I'm totally on a craft kick now, so most of these posts will be about things that I've made, want to make, or wish someone would make for me =]. I'm currently into knitting, stenciling t-shirts, mod podging, and sewing (I just got a new sewing machine for christmas!)
